So I am going to start doing Prospect Profiles when I can for players I think are going to be on full-season teams going forward. I’m going to go off the bat with Full Season-A Columbia Fireflies, and try to give some nice little profiles of guys I project are going to be there for 2017.

2B/SS Michael Paez Age: 22 (12/8/95) H/W 5’7″/165 lbs Pos: 2B/SS B/T: R/R

I’ll start with Michael Paez, drafted out of Coastal Carolina University, SC in the Fourth Round, 130th overall. Paez was a power threat on the 2016 College World Series Champion Chanticleers. With CCU, he had a career .283/.386/.462 batting line in 187 games with 43 doubles, 4 triples, and 25 homers while playing mostly shortstop. However, during his season with the Brooklyn Cyclones, Paez hit .190/.270/.285 with 11 doubles and two homers in 46 games. With the Cyclones, he played mostly Second Base.

Paez is likely a second baseman going forward, as many scouts project him there despite above-average speed and an average arm and okay glove. With his speed, he can definitely swipe a base or two.

With his bat, it’s a different story. Paez had his best year as a sophomore hitting .326/.436/.526 with eight homers and did well in the Cape Cod League with a .295/.417/.372 line before hitting hitting .279/.370/.519 with 15 homers in his draft year. From how it looks from the stats, Paez sold out for power as his strikeouts rose steadily, and didn’t steal as many bases as the year before (19 in 15′ to 7 in ’16). His walks also dipped when he sold out for power. Keep in mind that CCU’s stadium is a hitter’s park, so a few of these stats may be inflated.

While his transition to pro ball was rough, Paez has the potential to be a second baseman with some patience and pop, and will get the chance to redeem his tough start in Columbia this year. A possible tweak to his approach in 2015 may be more enticing moving forward and may produce better results for Paez.
