Pitcher to Watch

Among those who will be returning is senior right-handed relief pitcher Stephen Villines. Villines, a native of Lake Forest, California, holds a 2.37 career ERA in 151.2 innings. He is known for his submarine-style pitching, and it has baffled hitters of the Big 12 during his three years. He was a member of the All-Big 12 Second Team in 2016 and after being an Honorable Mention in his sophomore year and All-Freshman team during his freshman year. In 2016 he pitched a total of 50.2 innings on 25 appearances, tallying a record of 5-2 with a 2.13 ERA and 47 strikeouts while only walking 16. He also takes a perfect fielding percentage into his senior year as he has yet to make an error in his college career.

Arsenal: Three-pitch pitcher that relies mostly on fastball. Sits upper 80s, but with significant arm side run. Excellent command, ability to spot pitch anywhere in the strike zone. Does not have much sink. Slider does not have much depth, but has sharp bite. Plays fastball and slider off of each other. Changeup fades down and in to right-handed batters, gets swings and misses. Plus movement and command of pitches provide promising future in bullpen.

Mechanics: Sidearm delivery. Timing mechanism involves rocking back and forth after coming set. Has a short leg kick. Sidearm action causes natural deception, but also delays arm action and hides ball well. Once arm comes forward, arm action is very quick, difficult to see ball out of his hand. Arm action is clean, considering he is a sidearm pitcher.

Other: Ranked second in the Big 12 in saves in 2015 with 13. Struck out 56 hitters in 53 innings.

Submariner with great deception, University of Kansas Jayhawks. Looks like Mets look to do some good work in day 3. Another signing that will free some money for the Mets.
