Prospect Profile: 1B/3B Matt Oberste

Literally the forgotten first baseman in the Mets organization, who has done nothing but hit, and sometimes near the caliber of their top 1B Dominic Smith. Oberste has essentially been eternally tied to Smith from the day he started full season ball and was drafted seven rounds after him in 2013. He has played the last three years as second fiddle to the top prospect across A-ball, Advanced-A, and Double-A. Oberste has his own strengths and abilities, but an uphill battle to climb.

Prospect Profile: 1B Dash Winningham

Thinking about Winningham reminds me of an interaction I had with a co-writer before the 2014 draft. The writer asked me if I knew anything about the draft. I said yeah. He asked if when players get told by scouts about interest, and that the Mets were interested in someone he knew, does that actually translate into them being drafted. I said “of course, who is this guy?” Turns out to be Winningham, a first baseman with a lot of power.

Prospect Profile: 1B Dominic Smith

Probably the most divisive player in the Mets Minor League System, it’s hard to blame most people on that, but it’s a topic we need to discuss. To the Mets, it seems  Dominic Smith is the future, but it’s a debate to most if he will be because of a first baseman’s most coveted skill: power. Dominic has been devoid of it, but broke out a bit in Binghamton this past season. Brace yourself, this analysis is a doozy.
