Prospect Profile: SS Andres Gimenez

I’m back, and it took a while to get done with this semester, but I come back with a vengeance, and I bring you one promising prospect you really don’t want to miss. This kid surprised all of us by skipping stateside rookie leagues and going directly to Full Season-A Ball. His name is….

L/R, 6’0″ 165 lbs, 9/4/1998 (18), Signed for $1.2 million in 2014 out of Barquisimeto, Venezuela

Prospect Profile: 3B David Thompson

Right now, the saddest thing going on is the continued deterioration of David Wright. For many of us, it’s a heartbreaking experience, knowing that Spinal Stenosis has brought down our once excellent third base thumper. Probably the closest starting caliber 3rd Baseman to the Major Leagues for the Mets, Thompson has a lot of athleticism, but a lot of questions too. Thompson has a possibility of being what replaces Wright in the Majors in the future, but he’s got a few questions around him as well.

Prospect Profile: 2B Vinny Siena

A 14th round draft pick out of UConn, Siena is a frustrating player, a live bat with the potential to hit very well, but is terribly inconsistent. Another 2nd baseman in the pipeline.

Prospect Profile: RHP Harol Gonzalez

It’s about time, Harol is incredibly advanced and I should have written about him earlier. Last season, Harol went to the Short Season-A Brooklyn Cyclones and simply dominated this past season and looks poised to start in full season in 2017. Despite stuff and size, Gonzalez is an excellent pitcher with a bit of promise, and will show it this season at full season ball.

Prospect Profile: 1B/3B Matt Oberste

Literally the forgotten first baseman in the Mets organization, who has done nothing but hit, and sometimes near the caliber of their top 1B Dominic Smith. Oberste has essentially been eternally tied to Smith from the day he started full season ball and was drafted seven rounds after him in 2013. He has played the last three years as second fiddle to the top prospect across A-ball, Advanced-A, and Double-A. Oberste has his own strengths and abilities, but an uphill battle to climb.

Mets Sign Leon Byrd

The Mets signed Leon Byrd to a minor league contract, according to Baseball America. A Mets 25th round pick in 2012, Byrd opted to go to Rice and underperformed there, hitting a career .279/.376/.331. As a Junior at Rice, he was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 10th round for $30,000 as a cost-saving under slot pick.

Prospect Profile: OF John Mora

A player with quite a few tools, but hasn’t put it all together. Don’t you love that cliche? Nevertheless, Mora has been around for a while and he had some promise around him, he’s likely going to lose some playing time to some other players due to not enough performance.

Prospect Profile: RHP Witt Haggard

Prospect Profile: 2B/SS Luis Carpio

Another top prospect to look out for, Carpio burst out as a 17 year old in Rookie-League Kingsport, and was poised to make the jump to Full-Season Ball last season but fell to shoulder surgery. When healthy, Carpio is possibly one of the best middle infield prospects in the system, and is definitely one to watch at 19 years old.

Prospect Profile: RHP Ricky Knapp

A forgotten arm, Knapp is an interesting starter with a little upside, but the ability to eat innings. Drafted in the 8th round, he was expected to move quickly, but hit a few snags. He did very well in the middle minors in 2016 and is poised to possibly help the big club in 2017.
