Prospect Profile: 2B Vinny Siena

A 14th round draft pick out of UConn, Siena is a frustrating player, a live bat with the potential to hit very well, but is terribly inconsistent. Another 2nd baseman in the pipeline.

Prospect Profile: 2B/SS Luis Carpio

Another top prospect to look out for, Carpio burst out as a 17 year old in Rookie-League Kingsport, and was poised to make the jump to Full-Season Ball last season but fell to shoulder surgery. When healthy, Carpio is possibly one of the best middle infield prospects in the system, and is definitely one to watch at 19 years old.

Prospect Profile: Infielder Phillip Evans

(MILB.com)

Although the Mets’ draft in 2011 has yielded modest returns to this point, skepticism among fans regarding the then-new front office regime’s first venture into the amateur draft remains prevalent.  The front office made their first splash by drafting a relative no-name from Wyoming named Brandon Nimmo. Using their first pick on a kid who never played high school ball felt as much like a statement regarding the new modus operandi as it did an attempt to find authentic Big League talent. But the organization’s most audacious maneuver in 2011 coincided with selecting Phillip Evans in the 15th round. Nearly six years later, Evans remains an enigmatic prospect who we are still parsing out.

Prospect Profile: INF Jeff McNeil

An underrated player who is usually under the radar, and had hernia surgery that put him on the shelf last year when a breakout was definitely due. He also got engaged the other day, so I decided to cover him instead of a Spring Training Invitee. No worries, I will cover him next time.

Prospect Profile: Middle Infielder Gavin Cecchini

(MLB.com)

Gavin Cecchini’s prestige has fallen victim to the mob. The mob makes snap judgments on players and sticks with those judgments until they are vindicated, and we hear about how accurate the mob was for eternity, or they’re thoroughly proven wrong, and the mob slinks away into a corner. Cecchini will be a mob litmus test. Billed as a low ceiling/high floor pick when he was selected in 2012, the mob’s snap judgment was as much a referendum on Paul DePodesta’s pet projects as it was an analysis of Cecchini. But for three years, from 2012-2014, the mob was right and Cecchini’s fate as a prized prospect—or as the mob called him, a bust—was sealed.

So I am going to start doing Prospect Profiles when I can for players I think are going to be on full-season teams going forward. I’m going to go off the bat with Full Season-A Columbia Fireflies, and try to give some nice little profiles of guys I project are going to be there for 2017.
